The painting Kyoto is inspired by the form of Kōgetsudai – a conical mound of white gravel located in the Zen garden at Ginkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto. The central form does not dominate, but radiates a quiet, focused force – a presence grounded in time, resistant to transience and change. The vertical lines surrounding it evoke both the rhythmic raking of garden gravel and the rainy lines known from classic Japanese woodcuts. In this ambiguous structure, nature merges with ritual, contemplation with matter. Kyoto is a meditation on permanence and harmony – on a force that does not require gesture to be felt. The painting, measuring 150x150 cm, was created using a proprietary technique involving layering oil pigment and Carrara marble onto canvas. The working process proceeded in a rhythm of repetitive, focused gestures, the material trace of which creates a pulsating, sensual surface – open to light and the changing gaze.
