The artwork represents the union between Cupid and Psyche through a precise material and chromatic contrast. On one side, Cupid, immersed in warm tones of red and enveloped by the copper background, symbolizes the earthly nature and the physical matter subject to the passage of time; his reclined face with closed eyes describes his passionate nature and total abandonment to the dimension of desire. On the other side sits Psyche, expressed through cold tones of blue and a swarm of gold butterflies, her symbol and the archetype of the soul. Unlike Cupid, Psyche keeps her eyes open and directs her gaze straight at the viewer, presenting white pupils that become a symbol of inner light. Upon the canvas, the sacred geometry of the Flower of Life progressively composes itself, giving birth to the butterflies, which are partially crafted with the very last historic hand-beaten gold leaf from the Mario Berta Battiloro workshop in Venice, remaining permanently brilliant and incorruptible over the oxidizing background.
