The
fears of starting a new life, of leaving the context we know and
settling in a new social system, are fears that haunt Cuban migrants.
Socialism is all we have known for many years and the shock with new
contexts makes our existence full of fears because legally it is a long
and painful road to become part of a new country and a new social
system. We live the fear of being deported, of being returned, we live
the pain of moving away from our family without knowing exactly when we
will return home and give a kiss to our loved ones. We pursue the
promise of a happy and prosperous future, a dream that is fraught with
sacrifice. The slaughterhouse, is that place that became familiar to me
in Halle (Saale), a sad remnant of the socialism and division that also
lived through this land that today welcomes me. Somehow my personal
history intersects with German history itself and brings me to pursue my
own sad promise of a happy future.
