Munich-born and based in Rome for over 25 years, Tania Welz creates work that explores the space between creation and dissolution, where materials undergo alchemical transformations of mutation and transfiguration.
Through processes such as oxidation, stitching, tearing, knitting, and crystallization, Welz reveals the inherent vitality of matter—porous, permeable, and intimately connected to our own impermanence. Her distinctive approach transforms fabrics into mineralized copper surfaces and knits copper wire into forms that balance visual delicacy with material strength. Whether through controlled technique or the unpredictable blooming of patinas, Welz works toward moments where matter reveals its own agency.
Welz’s work has been exhibited internationally, including in China, Germany, the UAE, and the United States. In 2023, she presented the solo exhibition Oltre Confine at the Museum Castromediano in Lecce, Italy. Her accolades include the 4th International Emerging Artist Award in Dubai; the Huacui Museum Special Prize (Arte Laguna Prize, 19th edition, 2024), which granted her a residency at the Huacui Contemporary Art Museum in Shanghai; and the Arte Laguna Special Prize (20th edition, 2025), leading to a residency at NY20+ in Chengdu, Sichuan, in 2026. She is also a finalist in the Land Art category for the Arte Laguna Prize (20th edition, 2025).
Her works are held in both private and public collections, including a commissioned piece for the Dutch railway network ProRail and a long-term loan at the Museum Castromediano in Lecce.
Welz continues to develop her practice from her studio in the heart of Rome.
