Gisella Candido (Locri, Italy) is a painter working at the threshold between art informel and relief. She constructs dense, high-relief surfaces on canvas — felt, gesso and modelling paste — from which faces, eyes and fissures emerge or recede, allowing gold to settle along the fractures, where matter gives way. In certain works the surface refuses to hold still: thermochromic and photochromic pigments cause a wound to appear with warmth, or a face to complete itself solely under ultraviolet light, so that damage and repair become events contingent upon warmth, light and attention rather than stable conditions. Her work is concerned with memory, the wound, and the sedimentation of time. She lives and works in Siderno, Italy.
