One of the series 《名色(Namarupa)》
Based on the term "名色 (Namarupa)" in Chinese Buddhism, this series of works by Lyu delves into the doctrine of the Twelve Nidānas, a concept that is related to desire. In doing so, Lyu combines it with the complexities of gender and desire, presenting the continuous disintegration and reconfiguration of desire.
According to Buddhist theory, "名色 (Namarupa)" can be viewed as the stage where humans explore the external world after possessing the five senses. Subsequently, human desires begin to rise and fall intermittently like tides. Desires are portrayed in the images through blurry patterns and bright colours.
The visuals showcase a diverse range of gender and desire presented in a distinctive manner. The works blur the boundaries of desire, sparking reflection on how it defines us and how we, in turn, define it.
