"On the day of the execution, all the people in town were screaming. The commissariat where it took place was in the same neighborhood as my father's house. I was locked in my room." These are the words of Maria Mandessi Bell on the day of the execution of her cousin King Rudolf Duala Manga Bell and her fiancé Adolph Ngoso Din, who were murdered by the German colonial government in Cameroon in 1914 for their resistance against German plans to establish an apartheid system in their hometown Douala. They have not been rehabilitated by the German government to this day.
