Vigil is an artwork addressing the current injustice faced by our oceans in light of pollution and abuse by mankind. In light of our oceans’ being defenceless to the abuse by man, the artist conceived Virgin Vigil as a silent guardian and protector standing watch over the ocean, ensuring that the poison of man and his waste will not be able to reach areas illuminated by its many mystical lights.
At the same time, the arrangement of lights around it’s structure doubles as candlelight vigil for the underwater wildlife and flora which have gone extinct as a result of man’s indifference, mourning for their loss. Emitting pure-white and warm lighting, the vigil exudes a quasi-religious undertone, similar to that of the Virgin Mary. It serves as a still object, of quiet remembrance, reflection and solitude in the vast expense that is the ocean.
