This piece is a ceramic back of a postcard. A reminder to myself how I felt a few years ago. Going through a burnout caused by multiple reasons but a big part of it was the toxic relationship I was in.
Ceramic as a more durable material, connects to the ancient tradition of ostracon pottery, where messages were permanently etched into shards of pottery, allowing them to endure longer than fleeting text messages, emails, or handwritten letters. This enduring medium adds weight to the emotions conveyed, symbolizing how personal, often painful experiences are carried through time. The delicate nature of the ceramic, contrasted with its durability, amplifies the power of oversharing, where the permanence of the messages reflects the lasting impact of emotions and the complexity of human connection. a refusal of that erasure: a personal, painful note fixed in a medium that defies the fleeting pace of contemporary communication.
Once, important words were carved in stone to endure across centuries. Today, we send an email or a text, instantaneous, weightless, and quickly forgotten.By painting words onto ceramic, I reclaim the slowness and permanence of inscription.
This message will not vanish with a swipe; it will stay.
