In "Ripples at Night", lacquer artist Zhou Fang depicts a nocturnal landscape of lake, mountains, and a golden crescent moon. Using the traditional bodiless lacquer technique, she shapes the scene into a sculptural composition where subtle ripples move across the water beneath the quiet night sky. The work conveys serenity while preserving the lake’s continuous, almost imperceptible motion.
Inspired by water unsettled by an unceasing wind, Zhou captures the fleeting transformation of ripples as they emerge, shift, and disappear. Through lacquer, she suspends this transient movement within a seemingly timeless space. The gentle undulations of the nocturnal lake become a meditation on the balance between softness and strength, stillness and motion, reflecting the artist’s sustained observation of everyday life.
