La Tigrosa is part of a larger series of work called "Bajabrijes". "Bajabrijes" is a term i coined to describe the magical and fantastical creatures that reside in Baja California. Inspired by the "Alebrijes" of Oaxaca and Central Mexico, the the main focus of the "Bajabrijes" was to explore how art can be used to create a sense of identity, and provide sustainable economic opportunities to the artisans of Baja California.
A main aspect of what makes a Bajabrije is that they have to be made with sustainable materials. La Tigrosa was made entirely out of old cardboard boxes, cartoneria (mexican paper mache), and left over paint.
The first Bajabrijes where created by myself, as the project has progressed I have given workshops and worked with community artisans to develop grassroot initiatives that can help further evolve and democratize the concept and possibilites of what Bajabrijes can be.
