Having lived in South Africa when I was younger I remember when African women were only portrayed predominantly in folk art and not much in contemporary art. I wanted to challenge my own eyes to see a woman of colour in art in a fresh way. Therefore I wanted to put a spin on African wood carvings by replacing it with the latest technology by scanning my clay sculpted portrait then 3D printing it in wood pulp & sugar. I like the morphing of hand made sculpture & technology but by using this Bio material.
I am also making reference to self reflection in the emotion shown in the face. By enlarging the proportions it is less of a portrait and more an effort to highlight the uniqueness of the human head.
