Live glass casts of Hangman's Elm, an elm tree located on the northwest corner of Washington Square Park in New York City. Hangman's Elm is believed to be the oldest tree in New York City. Hangman’s Elm can communicate; trees send chemical signals to other trees through the fungal web around their root tips. The branches of Hangman’s Elm may not show life much longer. But even if the elm becomes a stump, it hasn't died. The roots hold potent ground; from an old stump, new life can grow.
