The whole artistic process of Mara Palena revolves around a research on human emotions in relation to time, memory and identity. In installations and mixed-media works, the artist uses photography, sound and video as a starting point, to then manipulate and alter them, exploring themes such as memory and individuality. The awareness of human frailty haunts her research: the study of emotional states becomes central in the design of her multisensory and multimedia installations.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reworking (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy in which the person being treated is asked to remember distressing images while generating a type of bilateral sensory input, such as side-to-side eye movements or hand touch. The goal is to promote the exploration of EMDR, supporting various scientific researches that affirm the effectiveness of this therapy in the treatment of psychological problems, such as phobias, dyspareunia, depression, anxiety and eating disorders. This work is part of a research that aims to represent what happens in your mind during this practice. It is a study of trauma and its consequences on behavior and memory. The artist explores the most intimate mechanisms of her unconscious that emerged during EMDR therapy, not neglecting the traumatic events of her experience, in order to accompany the viewer on a path that retraces all the emotional stages. Mara Palena reprocesses her individual experience to open it to a collective feeling.
