It was April 6, 2009 when an earthquake of moment magnitude Mw 6.3 occurred with an epicenter a few kilometers from L'Aquila. The damage was very serious. The toll was 309 victims, thousands injured and at least seventy thousand displaced, causing irreversible damage in the local community in about 30 seconds for an extension equal to a circle of 40 km radius but which made central Italy vibrate from side to side .
The work aims to be in some way a tribute and message of rebirth, of possible reconstruction, to be understood not only from the construction point of view but from the immaterial, social, community point of view, of citizenship, of the city understood as a human agglomeration for which it is necessary to protect the memory, traditions, history, leaving visible if necessary the signs of the dramas that pass through it and from which new seeds, new possibilities can arise.
Since ancient times, the Kintsugi technique has been used in Japan, which involves the use of gold leaf or silver leaf to recompose the fragments of a broken ceramic object. The shards are rejoined giving the object a completely new, shiny and precious look.
The work, through a transposition of this technique, wants to highlight the possible opportunity deriving from the drama, rupture and destruction caused by the sad seismic experience that hit the city of L'Aquila.
This opportunity, in fact, would consist in the possibility of catalyzing the energy, the tensions, the forces released, the emotions to creatively return them to the city through art, architecture, urban planning, placing emphasis on the protection of memory collective and on recovery, thus avoiding the forced removal/requalification of every single element, compromised or otherwise.
