This artwork is created through long-exposure
photography, where LED light sources are manually manipulated in front of the
camera to "paint" the final image. By fusing the brushstrokes of
Arabic calligraphy with the mythical phoenix from the Chinese Classic of Mountains and Seas,
it presents a unique contemporary light painting technique that embodies
cultural dialogue between China and the Arab world. The piece visualizes an
ancient Eastern fire phoenix soaring through historically significant Arabic
architecture, as if bridging millennia of shared heritage.
Artist Statement
The Luminous Mythical Creatures series,
launched in 2020, has become Roywang’s signature
project. It reinterprets legendary beasts from Chinese classics like Shan Hai
Jing through modern light painting technology, amassing 400 million online
impressions and culminating in a 2025 solo exhibition at Denmark’s Odense Andersen Art Festival.
