District Line #2, London
(part of the City Scans project) shows commuters on the tube in
central London, Nov. 2024.
The City Scans project captures the movement of
commuters across the megalopolises of Tokyo, London, Hong Kong and Istanbul
using ultra high-speed video. The project investigates the “liminal zone” - the
unseen space where the physical and digital worlds converge. The footage is
reconstructed into layered time structures, creating imagery that reveals
extended time sequences of real-life situations, offering fresh perspectives on
urban life, exposing the rhythm and pulse of the city. The daily commute emerges
as a shared ritual: people moving together through systems of stations,
networks, carriages, escalators, and walkways, regardless of wealth, age,
gender or ethnicicity. Yet, individual bodies appear warped and fluid,
reflecting the tension of existence in the digital age as commuters merge into
the fabric of the megalopolis.
