Within The Catch, confronts you before you have time to look away. A mass of fish, rendered in explosive bursts of crimson, cobalt, orange and white, thrash and press against each other in the chaos of a haul. But look closer, the net is not painted. It is real. Ghanaian contemporary artist Kobina Nyarko has embedded an actual fishing net into the canvas, collapsing the boundary between art and lived reality.
The fish are not just depicted as caught,they are caught, held under the same material that pulls them from the ocean every day.
Painted with thick, energetic brushwork that mirrors the violence and vitality of the catch, this is a work that carries both the weight of West African coastal life and a quiet, urgent question about what we take from the sea. It is raw, immediate and impossible to ignore.
