I use the pencil as the minimal unit of construction—an object that goes beyond its instrumental function to become a module, a line, and a volume. The piece I present is composed of series of pencils arranged in a geometric pattern that reveal a concentric composition. I choose the Staedtler Noris pencil, with its distinctive black and yellow bands, because it introduces a preexisting visual component that guides the composition. Through the act of sharpening, I incorporate variables of wear, interruption, and difference, interspersing new pencils with others on the verge of disappearance. The result is a set of object-drawings in which form emerges not only from accumulation and repetition, but also from erosion and wear.
