Concept – The Weight of Silence
The Weight of Silence explores the invisible burden of depression through the language of the human body.
Rather than depicting suffering directly, the painting expresses the silent emotional weight carried by those who struggle in silence.
The figure is curled into herself, embodying vulnerability, withdrawal, and the instinct to seek protection. The bluish tone of her skin suggests the gradual loss of vitality caused by an emotional contamination spreading from her blackened hands. These hands symbolize the darkness of depression—an invisible force that slowly permeates both body and mind. In contrast, her feet remain lighter in tone, grounding her to the earth and suggesting that, despite everything, hope still remains.
From her back, a dark mass emerges, representing the burden she carries within. It is not merely a shadow, but the emotional weight that clings to her and slowly escapes from her body, making visible what usually remains unseen. This element transforms an internal experience into a tangible presence, allowing the invisible to take form.
Through figurative realism and symbolic colour, the work invites viewers to reflect on the hidden nature of emotional suffering. Rather than offering answers, it creates a space for empathy and contemplation, encouraging us to recognize the silent struggles that often remain invisible.
