Revisiting Sue from a different pose, this painting continues the dialogue with Lucian Freud’s work by shifting the focus toward domestic space, textiles, and the forms of memory embedded within them. A household smock and an inherited tapestry, stitched with gold thread and integrated into the canvas, replace the elements of the original painting, introducing another temporality into the composition.
By merging representation with material presence, the painting blurs the boundaries between image and object. The textiles are not merely decorative elements: they become vessels of memory, carrying traces of use, gestures, and transmitted histories. The body remains at the center of the composition, surrounded by silent materials that connect the history of art to a more intimate history, where objects, gestures, and materials become carriers of transmission.
