Oil on panel
Meredith is part of the Harold collection, a series of paintings created by artist Eleonora Giurgevich and inspired by the characters from her novel of the same name, set in late 19th-century England.
As the protagonist’s older sister, Meredith embodies the conflict between personal desire and social expectations. Her long brown hair and blue eyes frame a gaze that rests on the viewer with a subtle expression of superiority and pride. Raised to respect the conventions of the time and constantly on the lookout for the best match, Meredith struggles to question the traditions that have guided her life, even when they conflict with her most authentic feelings.
Through this portrait, Eleonora Giurgevich explores themes of personal redemption and tension regarding late-19th-century English traditions, as well as the possibility of escaping imposed roles. The work also bridges the gap to the present, connecting this historical conflict with the ongoing contemporary quest for redemption between individual dreams and reality—between what one desires to be and what circumstances allow one to become.
