This work explores the layering of Japanese identity, memory, and contemporary culture through the figure of a wandering samurai constructed from fragments of architecture, signage, and urban symbols. Inspired by Kyoto’s temples, traditional armor, street graphics, and modern consumer culture, the piece blends historical imagery with elements of contemporary city life into a hybrid character.
I wanted viewers to reflect on how cities and cultures are built through accumulation — history, commerce, tradition, and imagination existing simultaneously. The figure appears both powerful and fragile, carrying an entire cultural landscape as armor.
I chose acrylic paint for its vivid contrasts, sculptural texture, and layered detail. The expressive contemporary style, combined with references to Japanese illustration and street aesthetics, allowed me to merge traditional iconography with a modern visual language.
