Kurt Cobain means a lot to me. He changed the landscape of music, but for me he was a poet and artist of unique ability with great sensitivity to humans and how we exist in this world. He had a great affinity for the human body and it's functions; he even titled an album 'In Utero,' and so I painted Kurt inside a womb. He also refers to an umbilical noose, which I had when I was in the womb and had to have an emergency procedure to save my life during the birthing process. I used my own hand as a model in the painting, in my attempt to save Kurt. He is surrounded by an amniotic sac, a placenta, endometrium, a few fetuses, and some poppies which represent his addiction. You will also see cracks in his skin, which represent his affinity for dolls, which had cracks in their porcelain. I filled these cracks with gold as done in the practice of kintsugi, whereby the Japanese feel objects are more beautiful after the had been broken.
