Creativity is sparked by restlessness with what “is” and the curiosity to try what is “beyond” -- whether it be the themes we tackle, the tools we use, or the manner we articulate our points of view. As an artist, I welcome the uneasy compulsion that spurs my search for new and unexpected ways to express what is close to my heart and mind. In recent years, it has been the challenge of remaining true to my core and faith in the face of world issues like domestic and international politics, responsibility to the environment, widespread commercialism seeping into the most common aspects of daily life. And on top of that the closer, more intimate changes in personal and family life: growing old, children spreading their wings, the uncertainties Life at large.
This series is a monochromatic expression of my philosophy of keeping centered during the broad strokes of Life, trusting that all other things will fall to place by grace. Using the rich, veiling and somber attributes of Black to convey vastness of Life, I took a familiar medium (acrylic) through twists and sweeps, at all times striving to maintain a balance in composition. The process coaxed out unexpected textures, lines and splatters, balanced with a subtle modern edge, to the original white space. I hope to convey that being true to your center and faith provides the ultimate graceful counterpoint that will balance out whatever Life tosses to us.
