JANICE LIUSON-YOUNG
Visual Artist and Art Educator.
Artist’s Statement:
God is a wonderful God. He is awe-inspiring, amazing, admirable, utterly rich and mysterious.
He is also a God of wonders. That is, His work (objective reality) reveals Himself, and when comprehended as such is perceived as “wonderful”.
Man, is part of God's creation, and thus shares in the wonderfulness of reality. But unlike the rest of creation, Man also was given the ability to discern and enjoy the wonder of God in creation.
God's reality serves as an invitation to man to work with God as co-creator - building upon the wonder inherent in objective reality in order to create further wonder. This co-creation of wonder is experienced in part as subjective reality, and yet, because of God's sustaining power, is still part of God's objective reality.
Our experience of reality however is also colored and marred by sin or evil (in the world and in ourselves), which causes us to perceive reality as bizarre, harmful, destructive, poor and “wonderless”. This “poverty” of vision and experience expresses itself in many forms and guises – atheism, materialism, “science”, utilitarianism, commercialism, “modernism”, etc.
The role of the artist is to discern again this rich wonder of God in the “objectified” reality, and reveal the mystery that has been obfuscated by the simplifying lines of convenience, practicality, and selfishness, through the act of co-creating works of further wonder.
It is of course true that not all artists perceive this to be their role. But, still ...
The quality of a work of art can therefore be measured by the depth of the discernment, the clarity of the revelation (or communication of the discernment), and the imaginative compulsion of the creative work.
It bears emphasizing that the true artist does not deny the pain and suffering in the world in order to present an idealized version of reality. A scrubbed and sanitized image is the product of propaganda, not art. The true artist shows warts and all, and yet presents the wonder of God in the midst of evil and imperfection.
I create realistic illustration and portraits, and abstract interpretations in oil, acrylic and multi-media. My subjects range from every day slices of life, to the various elements in nature, flora, fauna, people’s faces and people in action, to still life, cityscapes, dreamscapes, and the world as I see it or as it can be. My recent works include modern multi-media 2-D paintings. I am a passionate educator of the arts, and supporter of art students and upcoming artists. I have done solo and group exhibits of my works, both here and abroad.
