I am interested in the beauty and chaos of nature and how this affects our emotions.
For example: the awe and wonder we feel when looking at a sunset vs the terror and chaos we feel when faced with a storm. Despite their opposing energies, these manifestations of nature are powerful, profound and have an immense effect on our emotional state. I am interested in exploring how this is mirrored in abstract painting, as we (artists) search for the balance between light and dark, and harmony and contrast. In this painting, I set out to create a work of art that balances these energies. I began my process by painting bright abstract shapes in clear, vibrant colours, inspired by the shapes and palette of summer. To disrupt and dramatize the piece, I added black, jagged brush marks, which resembles the chaos and unpredictability of a storm.
