Artist Statement
Love of colour is at the core of my practice. Exploring the different textures and shades of the spectrum, brings me a sense of joyful wonder, which I hope is communicated through my painting. My medium is acrylic. Over the years, I have explored and evolved different ways of working with it. Currently, I am enjoying the tactile and sensuous properties of impasto painting, using tools such as palette knives and squeegees, and materials, such as, modelling paste and gold leaf.
I feel that each colour has a different, innate quality and my goal as an artist is to attune myself to and express these unique essences. My practice is meditative and inward. Every colour, ultimately, is a variant of primal light and I would like all my work to be a revelation of this sun-like source. Traditionally, my main inspirations are Kandinsky and Klee, though I am interested in how artists throughout the ages have depicted the numinous dimension of human experience and recently I am finding great inspiration in the work of contemporary greats, such as Sebastian Merk, as well as masters of the past, Turner and the Impressionists.
Absorbing colour theories, from the 19th century to contemporary painting today. I research nature as the artists' muse, exploring the manifestation of colour in the natural world. Influenced by a breadth of research, from Goethe's Theory of Colours (1810) to Harrod Buhner's Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm (2014), aesthetic and sensory qualities of nature inform my practice, as I express myself through abstract expressive painting.
I use mixed methods and media to create large, dramatic works that attract the viewer through vibrant swathes of colour. I hope that my work provides stimulation, curiosity and wonder for the viewer.
