Congo Square was the allowed location in the colony of Old New Orleans where African Americans were allowed to sing and dance. Over the years their traditional African music and dance was carried by steamboat up the Mississippi River to have a major influence on American music. This painting received the National Gold Medal for Veterans National Medical Arts Awards 2018.
