“Being Watched” is the opening piece of The Dissolution Trilogy,
a series examining the psychological unraveling of the self under
internal and invisible pressures. Executed entirely in acrylic, the
painting’s natural cracks, created through impasto alone, symbolize the
fracturing of identity that emerges when a person feels relentlessly
observed.
At the center of the composition, the enlarged eye
absorbs all imagined gazes, embodying the intense hyper-awareness
experienced by someone who perceives scrutiny everywhere, whether real
or not. The cracked and tense surface becomes a physical record of
emotional overload, capturing a mind caught in relentless vigilance.
As
the first chapter of a larger narrative, “The Watched” introduces the
progression from acute hyper-vigilance to dissociation and ultimately to
psychological shutdown. While only this initial work is submitted, the
subsequent pieces (“Dissociation” and “Shutdown”) are available for review upon request as part of the complete trilogy.
The circular canvas creates an enclosed, pressurized space that heightens the feeling of constant observation.
Through
this series, I aim to render invisible psychological states visible
through texture, distortion, and form. Each fracture in the paint echoes
a fracture in the subject’s sense of safety, stability, and inner
coherence.
