"And you kiss me like a queen, like a slave and a
wife" - This is an excerpt from the poem "Elene Dariani"
Elene Dariani's identity remains a mystery in Georgian
poetry.
Fourteen poems by 20th-century poet Paolo Iashvili, written
under the pseudonym Elene Dariani, explore feminine erotic and romantic
feelings. Later archival discoveries revealed Elene Dariani to be Elene
Bakradze, a friend of Iashvili.Born in Tbilisi in 1897, Elene Bakradze met
Paolo Iashvili in 1912, sparking a romantic relationship that persisted despite
both marrying others.Neither Bakradze nor Iashvili acknowledged the true
authorship of the poems during their lifetimes.
