Rising dike
A large
part (60%) of Holland is lying below the sea level. To protect the country from
flooding it is surrounded by a network of dikes. The rising sea level is a big
problem. The dikes have to be increased to keep the country safe and dry.
Together with architect Ben van der Meer, I was commissioned to create a land
art project in the fisher’s harbor of Lauwersoog. The topic of the rising sea
level and the low-lying country behind the dike was very visible at this
location. For us the reason to start increasing the dike and directly creating
a viewing point on it to make this problem also visible for other people.
