DUNE is a collectible design object, designed by German studio BUDDE and handcrafted by Nando Studio in Cologne. It was unveiled during Milan Design Week 2025 at RoCollectible in Galleria Rossana Orlandi. The collaboration between BUDDE – shortlisted as Emerging Designer of the Year at the Dezeen Awards 2024 – and Ferdinando Colosimo, founder of Nando Studio, began in 2024 as part of NEUDEUTSCH, a curated platform by Julian Daynov highlighting the new wave of German design.
DUNE reimagines the typology of a rug, elevating it from a flat textile to a three-dimensional, sculptural chaise lounge. The design is inspired by nomadic desert cultures, where rugs serve as essential elements of daily life and social gatherings, and by the fluid forms and warm gradients of sand dunes. Its gun-tufted Merino wool surface is soft and tactile, with flowing patterns that echo the shifting tones of sand under sunlight, blending cultural storytelling with European-style comfort and modern aesthetics.
A removable aluminium support structure, bent into a fluid silhouette, lets the rug rise to a height of 42 cm, offering seated and reclined positions. The structure can be attached from either side using velcro fasteners or removed entirely, e.g. for transportation. Measuring 300 × 175 × 42 cm, DUNE adapts seamlessly across residential, hospitality, and gallery environments. The aluminium is 100% recyclable, and the rug can be rolled or folded for efficient transport.
Produced as a unique, handcrafted object, DUNE reflects material integrity and sustainable craftsmanship. The Merino wool is renewable and biodegradable, and the manual gun-tufting process creates minimal waste, with offcuts repurposed in the studio. The piece embodies slow, collectible design, resisting mass production and fostering a deeper, tactile connection with the object and its origins.
By merging art, craft, and function, DUNE challenges conventional distinctions between furniture, textile, and artwork. Its versatile, interactive form invites users to sit, recline, and engage, while sparking curiosity and conversation. As a functional artwork and adaptable design piece, DUNE offers a thoughtful, enduring contribution to contemporary interiors.
