STATEMENT
Samanta Malavasi is an Italian visual artist based in Berlin, recognized for her distinctive approach to creating layered, monochromatic compositions. Her work explores the interplay between material, texture, and meaning, imprinting paint onto diverse surfaces—plexiglass, fabric, PVC, canvas, paper, plastic, and wood—to investigate the beauty of the infinite through minimalist yet profound expressions. Each layer of her work reveals a narrative tied to the themes of connection, community, and the undefined, reflecting her belief that "nothing is ever finished." Malavasi’s art is a bridge that links past and future, weaving together traces of human journeys into what she describes as a "common alphabet." This alphabet is not fixed but continuously evolving, just like collective memory and truth. Her intricate patterns evoke communities in motion, where unity is not a static concept but a progression of intertwined paths. Humanity itself is composed of overlapping layers, signs that blend and merge, dissolving individual boundaries to create a collective experience. Artist residencies are a fundamental part of her practice. By immersing herself in different cultures, Malavasi gathers new traces, alphabets, and signs, which interlace with existing ones to create an ever-expanding network of connections. Each residency becomes a bridge to a new community, enriching her exploration of memory, time, and the infinite. Her art thus becomes a testament to the stratification of human existence, the encounter of stories, and the weaving together of lived experiences. Before fully dedicating herself to visual art, Malavasi was an author and illustrator of children’s books, an experience that left a deep imprint on her artistic language, giving it a strong narrative sensibility. Each of her works invites the viewer to reflect on their own journey, to recognize the traces left and received, fostering a dialogue between the personal and the universal. Her art serves as a reminder that everything—every layer, every trace—carries forward into the next, creating an endless cycle of transformation and beauty.
"Nothing is ever finished; it simply becomes part of the infinite."
