"The fanciful fauna of Véronique BÉNONY owes its
personality to gifts that would be those of a costume designer and a
psychologist.
Sheep, rams, horses, parrots, rabbits, fish or circus
characters benefit from an almost haute couture attention: the artist chooses
the pattern for each of them, cuts out the pieces of the pattern in clay before
assembling them and then adding buttons and other finishing touches. A few
lines will express the movement, and the texture of the earth will suggest the
skin, fur or scales.
These stoneware costumes do not reflect a simple decorative
choice, they also highlight the attitude and character of the animal.
Conversely, dressed in this way, and on second reading, they perhaps reveal the
caricature of human behavior that will not escape anyone….
Behind these smiling ceramics lies a know-how that has been
gradually and very deliberately built up, with François D’ORGLANDE at the
Beaux-Arts in Angers, then with the ceramists Alain VIENNEY for raku, Robert
LAWARRE in Vallauris for the play of patterns, Andreas HINDER in Italy and Dany
JUNG for animal art, Kato HIROSHIGUE in Japan. »
