He holds a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Architecture (Technical University Delft, 2009). At an early age he enjoyed intense private painting and drawing training (1996 - 2001) by the Dutch artist Erica Meyster (1949 - 2006).
In 2012 Robert made his career switch and has dedicated himself to the arts again. He has since produced a large body of work that is exhibited in numerous online and physical exhibitions, like his solo exhibition at the ‘Salon des Arts’ in Maastricht, the Netherlands (2023). The exhibition was curated by Ad Himmelreich, curator and former conservator of the Bonnefantenmuseum (Maastricht, NL), who has written an essay about the work of Robert.
His work is represented by gallery Al-Tiba9 Contemporary (Barcelona) on Artsy.
Van de Graaf is interested in exploring the intersection and connections between his inner (spiritual) life, the philosophy of (daily) life, and his reflections on nature or built environments. He is primarily working on his oil paintings, but he is also using drawings and watercolours.
His artworks have a distinguished visual language and are layered and structured through tensions between figuration and abstraction, nature and structure, energetic movement and balance, intuition and ratio, observation and reflection.
The artworks have been published in several international art magazines and art books, such as Art Maze Magazine, Aesthetica Magazine, art magazine Al-Tiba9, Contemporary Art Collector Magazine, Artsin Square Magazine and New Art Project Magazine.
His art is held in private collections across the Netherlands, the United States and France.
