Ma Ru Go Sha (Malgorzata Suchecka, 磨留悟謝) is a Polish contemporary artist whose work builds a bridge between the artistic traditions of East and West. Her paintings emerge from a lifelong search for beauty, uniting the living heritage of East Asian ink painting with a contemporary visual language shaped by nature, craftsmanship, travel and contemplative practice.
Growing up surrounded by the lakes and forests of northern Poland, she developed a lifelong sensitivity to nature, harmony and quiet observation, qualities that continue to shape her artistic practice. Her artistic journey began with years of architectural drawing, followed by studies in design, multimedia and visual communication. Before dedicating herself fully to painting, she worked as a packaging designer, creating visual identities and packaging for international brands. This experience shaped her understanding of composition, materiality and visual storytelling. Alongside her professional career, she explored oil painting, glass painting, murals, ceramics and decorative arts, continually searching for the artistic language that could best express her vision.
Years of travel, study and life across Europe and Asia profoundly shaped her artistic perspective. Living in Indonesia and returning regularly to Japan transformed her understanding of art from a technique into a way of seeing the world.
Her artistic practice follows the historical journey of East Asian painting, from its Chinese origins to the Japanese traditions that have preserved and refined this lineage over centuries. She studied gongbi, chinoiserie, sumi-e, suibokuga and nihonga, working with sumi ink, handmade washi paper, silk, mineral pigments and 24-karat gold. These disciplines became the foundation upon which she developed her own contemporary artistic language.
Japan became her second home and the place where her artistic voice found its deepest roots. She has developed her practice through direct study with Tohun Kobayashi, Harumi Tohsei Kobayashi and Rokendō Fujiwara, within the traditional master-student lineage. Alongside her artistic practice, she has spent many years studying Japanese contemplative traditions, culminating in the master level of Usui Shiki Ryōhō Reiki, experiences that continue to shape her understanding of presence, gesture, rhythm and intention.
Throughout her journey, she has never sought to master techniques for their own sake, but to discover how art can awaken beauty, restore harmony and deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
Working with ink, silk, handmade paper, mineral pigments and 24-karat gold, she creates paintings that invite contemplation and reveal the invisible relationships between nature, memory, light and human consciousness.
Since 2022, her works have been regularly exhibited and awarded during the international exhibition Art Beyond Boundaries at The National Art Center, Tokyo, Japan. Her artistic journey has been recognised with the Excellence Award (2022), the International Friendship Award (2023, 2024), the International Art Award (2025), and, in 2026, the prestigious Arata Shimao Prize for her painting Byakko - White Tiger, a juried award presented by Professor Arata Shimao of Gakushūin University. Her works are held in private collections in Poland, Europe, Asia and the United States.
She is the founder and teacher of San Mi Arte, a school of traditional Japanese sumi-e painting in Warsaw, Poland, dedicated to the authentic master-student tradition and the transmission of Japanese ink painting to future generations.
Her artistic name and seal, Ma Ru Go Sha (磨留悟謝), were bestowed upon her by Master Tohun Kobayashi. The four characters express the ideas of refinement, preserving goodness, awakening and gratitude, values that continue to guide both her life and artistic practice.
She believes that art has the power to transform the human heart, and that peace always begins within. Through her paintings she seeks to awaken beauty, restore harmony and remind us that even the smallest gesture can become the beginning of peace.
