Dr Stanislav Shmelev is an award winning British photographer (Honorary Colour Master, 2011; Premier Selection of Le Plus Grand Concours Photo du Monde, PHOTO Magazine, France, 2010; 3rd prize in Environmental Photography, British Council, 2005), painter, environmentalist and art historian.
Educated in art history and drawing and holding a PhD in Ecological Economics supported by European Commission PhD Fellowship (2003), and an MA in Photography from Falmouth University (UK) (2019), as well as TRIUM Global Executive MBA from the London School of Economics and Political Science, New York University Leonard Stern School of Business and HEC Paris (2021), Stanislav combines his interest in fine art and sustainability and expresses his admiration for the natural world through oil paintings and photographs, printed on aluminium plates.
Passionate about green economy, nature protection and sensitive ecosystems, Stanislav creates evocative environmental landscapes inspired by his travels in Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, UK, France and the countries of the Mediterranean.
Formerly a member of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, Senior Researcher at the Oxford University, and Visiting Professor at Universities of Geneva, Paris and Versailles, National Universities of Colombia and Kazakhstan, Stanislav devotes all his energy to the promotion of sustainability ideas both through the language of art and of science.

His photographic album 'Ecosystems: Complexity, Diversity and Nature's Contribution to Humanity' (Environment Europe Press, 2018) received letters of acknowledgement and support from HH Pope Francis, HRH Prince Charles, HE President Macron, HE Prime Minister Rutte, HE Prime Minister Modi, former head of European Commission DG Environment Janez Potocnik, former head of IUCN Julia Marton Lefevre, Honorary President of the Club of Rome Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, Nobel Prize-winning climate economist Prof. Mohan Munasinghe, Past Presidents of the International Society for Ecological Economics Prof. Peter May (Brazil) and Prof. Joan Martinez-Alier (Spain), distinguished systems scientist Prof. Fritjof Capra (USA), Honorary Editor of Resurgence Magazine and the Founder of Schumacher College, UK Satish Kumar and many others. Dr Stanislav is an author and editor of ‘Ecological Economics: Sustainability in Practice’ (Springer, 2012); 'Sustainability Analysis: an Interdisciplinary Approach' (Palgrave, 2013); 'Green Economy Reader: Lectures in Ecological Economics and Sustainability (Springer, 2017); 'Sustainable Cities Reimagined: Multidimensional Assessment and Smart Solutions' (Routledge, 2019). Dr Shmelev has given multiple keynote and invited lectures at the United Nations Rio+20 conference; UN Habitat World Urban Forum in Kuala Lumpur and Abu Dhabi; Astana Expo; UNFCC COP23 in Bonn and COP24 in Katowice; Singapore Sustainability Symposium, World Resources Forum, IUCN, and many distinguished universities: Princeton, University of Maryland, George Washington University, Cambridge, UCL, Oxford, University of Tokyo, National University of Singapore, University of Rotterdam, National University of Colombia, Wirtschafts Universitat Wien, UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro and many other venues.
