Kingley Vale is a magical place. The legend says that in 850AD the Anglo-Saxons had a battle with the Vikings here. This largest yew tree forest in Europe has trees that are up to 2000 years old. It is one of the first National Nature Reserves to be created in the UK by Sir Arthur Tansley, the author of the term 'ecosystem' and a proponent of environmental conservation. This site belongs to the South Downs National Park and is located on the Southern cost of Great Britain. The legend says that if a tree is cut, the sap that is emerging becomes red representing the blood of the vikings that fell there. Since ancient times these forests have been associated with druids, witchcraft and supernatural forces.
