Artist Statement
Painting, like language, is an act of giving boundaries to things, and at the same time, an act of dissolving those boundaries. I paint as a way of naming the nature and the world before me, one thing at a time, while also undoing that act of naming.
My practice moves between figuration and abstraction within the picture itself. Traditional Japanese painting materials, including mineral pigments, allow forms to bleed, settle, and dissolve through both intention and chance.
By creating spaces between one painting and another, or by painting an image within an image, I keep a deliberate distance from the canvas and from painting itself. Through this process, I explore how images emerge, disappear, and re-form, seeking a new territory for contemporary painting.
