Valeriya Shebelnichenko aka Okno (1996) is an artist, who currently lives and works in Turin.
Born in Mala Danylivka (Ukraine), she moved to Italy at the age of 8 year old. She graduated in an Art School in Forlí and started her own research and practice in painting. At the age of 21 she moved to Edinburgh, where she attended different live paintings and started exhibiting her works. In 2019 she moved back to Italy and continued her work ranging between painting, performance, illustration and digital art. Since 2021 her artistic career has been enriched. To mention, she worked with Yuval Avital creating a performance which was presented at Teatro Franco Parenti in Milan and attended the Flashback Art Fair in Turin, presenting a video art.
Okno is the Russian translation for "window", the scenes of her paintings are indeed a mix of our reality and her reality, where one can see a connection and a story. Deep and introspective, Okno works with both sensitivity and aggression. Her troubled and dark experiences brought her to paint in order to discover her unconscious mind and reveal all the wounds. That is how her art is now evolving from raw and crude scenes to a lively and surreal interplay of light and shadow. What inspires her in her continuous research is Mystery and above all Alchemy. In fact, painting is for her a powerful alchemical language through which one can get to speak the language of the World.
