Debashish Paul (b. 1994, Nadia, India) is a queer performance and visual artist working with body, sculptural costume, installation, and video. Their practice explores the intersection of queer identity, nature, mythology, and the politics of desire. Rooted in the cultural fabric of Varanasi and deeply influenced by local rituals, they utilize the body as a site of resistance, tenderness, and transformation, creating live archives of forgotten queer histories.
Debashish has been selected for the prestigious Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten Residency (2026–2028), Amsterdam, and has participated in significant international residencies, including Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, Spain (2024), Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2023), HH Art Spaces, Goa (2023), and the India Art Fair Artist Residency, New Delhi (2023). They also participated in the Kochi-Muziris Biennale Performance Residency (2022-23) curated by Nikhil Chopra and HH Art Spaces.
Their major solo exhibition A Thousand Years of Dreaming was presented at Emami Art, Kolkata (2024), curated by Mario D’Souza.
Debashish is a recipient of the Prince Claus Seed Fund (2022–23), Inlaks Fine Art Award (2022), and Allegro Prize (2021). Their work has been featured in significant platforms, engaging deeply with queer ecology, fluidity, and the politics of the internal body in resistance to social norms.
