I received my BFA in metalsmithing from the Rhode Island School of Design. My current work is mainly in fiber, ceramics, and printmaking. I have participated in residencies in New York at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Miami at Mana Exchange and New Jersey at Guttenberg Arts. My work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is part of the collection of the Chojun Textile and Quilt Art Museum in Seoul, South Korea. Currently, I am president of the Textile Study Group of New York which has over 250 members located around the world.
I see myself as a collector. I collect materials, objects, and techniques. My studio is filled with equipment and supplies spanning most art mediums. I work intuitively, crafting my pieces with a focus on the tactile nature of my materials and their interactions with each other.
In 2018 my work took on a more socially focused direction. That year I created an installation work, City of Shadows. It looked at our modern lack of interaction using full sized sheer fabric figures to represent the people unseen on the streets everyday as we pass by focused on our electronic devices.
2019 I began my series Domestic Violence which looks at the gun in American society viewed satirically as the centerpiece of the idealized 1950s-style American life.
Throughout the pandemic, I have been studying the embroidery techniques of India, Palestine and Ukraine. Though similar, they each come with a rich history and set of motifs. Palestinian embroidery, tatreez, is kept alive by Palestinians in the diaspora. By combining it with ceramics which have been formed, then broken, it reflects a people’s history and resilience in the face of continuing conflict. This work led me to create pieces reflecting the current struggles of the Ukrainian people with the invasion of their homeland by Russia. My new works use vyshyvanka styles of embroidery from Ukraine.
