I am passionate about enamelling, specialising in vitreous enamel on copper. My work both embraces the tradition of enamelling and also seeks to push the boundaries of this form. I strive to push the limits, kiln high firing the vitreous enamels, pushing them beyond their ideal firing point to produce amazing colours and interesting effects, emphasised by layering, cutting back and using sgraffito techniques. I love the process driven nature of this artform and the physicality of this work, applying powdered glass to the copper surface, firing at 930 degrees, liquefying the powder, to form a skin of glass on the copper surface. The outcome can be uncertain, which is exciting, producing unique pieces – a kind of alchemy.
My training as an archaeologist and museum curator have inspired my artwork. Now, after 10 years as a full-time artist, I am influenced by landscape and patterns in nature. My work evolves from observed detail, creating intricate thread-like lines and fine textural incisions on the copper to create an atmospheric, surreal aesthetic, distilling a sense of place, time and memory. Recently I was the invited artist at A.J. Wells (UK) and KVO (USA) factories and given the opportunity and facilities to work with steel. I was excited by the outcomes of using steel and I want to continue to expand my knowledge of enamelling, experimenting with new materials and larger sculptural 3D forms for future exhibitions.
I have over 20 years curatorial experience. I have been awarded commissions by the Bank of Ireland, Hunt Museum and OPW. I have participated in many group exhibitions including the Royal Academies in London and Scotland, Royal Ulster Academy and Royal Hibernian Academy exhibitions. I have had seven solo exhibitions and I am working towards an eighth solo exhibition in 2022.
