Althea Mallee is an Australian artist currently based in Udine, Italy. She graduated from Adelaide College of the Arts in 2019 where she received scholarship to participate as a documenting artist with Nomad Science in Mongolia. This cultural exchange greatly impacted her arts practice by widening her already developing world view. The religious syncretism she found in Mongolia highlighted a harmonious infusion from a variety of spiritual practices juxtaposed against a recently developing Ulaanbaatar. As the city grows ancient stories fade, with the current generation rejecting the nomadic lifestyle and adopting a western paradigm.
Althea's hyperrealist paintings capture multiculturalism by depicting the cultural ties found in spirituality and mythology in contrast with global modern societal, political, psychological and environmental concerns. In the Age of Science and Technology recent developments in scientific field have found commonalities presented in ancient eastern philosophy. Althea aims to unify these notions with timeless myths forming a hybrid of collective consciousness where east meets west. A preservation of ancient fables is paramount in her works by retelling analogous archetypes in conjunction with spiritual activism and utopian ideals.
Althea artworks have been showcased at numerous international galleries and festivals with many of her originals in private collections around the world. She is also a muralist with her works displayed on the streets of Australia, inside hotels, retail outlets, art studios, residences and restaurants.
