Emile Khalikov is a Moscow-based contemporary photographer specializing in cinematic visual storytelling. He grew up in an artist’s family, surrounded by sketches, paintings, and exhibitions from an early age. Although his formal background is in particle physics, visual art has always been an integral part of his life. A passionate cinephile raised in a big city, Emile fell in love with cinema long before photography. Intricate plots, vivid characters, and striking locations—both on screen and in real life—have shaped his photographic language.
His work focuses on characters that feel like they belong to a film: expressive, memorable, and caught mid-story. Minimalist architecture, carefully constructed color palettes, and precise detail serve to condense cinematic narratives into a handful of frames. Emile explores themes ranging from fairytale female archetypes to the social masks people wear to conceal their inner emotions. A recurring motif in his work is the relationship between character and environment, most notably in his series The City Within, which examines the inseparable bond between an individual and the geometry of their home city.
