I spent my formative years amidst the idyllic landscapes of the French Breton countryside, where the rich tapestry of local folklore fueled my imagination. I firmly believe that dreams serve as a catalyst for personal growth. As my curiosity expanded beyond regional tales, I found myself captivated by global folklore, with a particular fascination for Japanese narratives.
Driven by this passion, I pursued a degree in Art History at university. While I delved into the significance of artistic works and iconography, a sense of incompleteness lingered. Seeking the missing piece, I ventured to Montreal, Canada, where I enrolled in the School of Art Cabinetmaking (EEAM). Here, for the first time, everything clicked into place. The transformation of materials, particularly wood, and the inherent challenges it presented filled the practical void left by my Art History studies. I embraced diverse techniques, whether in design or pure art, always mindful of the underlying meaning.
In 2017, I took a bold step and established my own venture, Jonathän Jouan Studios, in Montreal. Within the realm of my creations, I meticulously design and craft furniture and objects using a myriad of cabinetmaking techniques. While many skills were imparted to me, others, like straw marquetry, became integrated into my repertoire through self-directed learning.
Following my graduation in 2020, I embarked on a new chapter in Copenhagen, Denmark, aiming to further refine my techniques and artistic style in a cultural milieu distinct from North America. This journey symbolizes my relentless pursuit of artistic evolution and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of my craft.
