The team behind Unlovable Creatures was formed during Medialab Matadero’s Synthetic Minds Open Lab #3 in January/February 2024 in Madrid. This international group, with members from Argentina, Austria, India, Ireland, Peru, and Spain, united under the Medialab framework to explore AI companions from a xenofeminist perspective. Their goal was to create non-anthropomorphic, techno-sentient cybercreatures that foster affective relationships with humans, while shifting the narrative from an anthropocentric viewpoint to a story told from the perspective of AI itself.
Bringing together expertise in motion design, data analysis, filmmaking, architecture, and performance, the team quickly gravitated toward telling a story of an encounter between two non-human intelligences. Over an intense two-week collaboration, they created the short film Unlovable Creatures, where viewers witness a unique encounter through the eyes of AI.
