I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, and work under the name Soldier.
My practice is rooted in themes of identity, conflict, and consumerism, and I often use my trademark camouflage print (once disapproved of by the Nigerian military) as a way to explore these ideas. For me, art is a way of transforming misplaced militancy and unrepresented voices into creativity.
Growing up as the son of a priest, my formative years were shaped by community and faith - experiences that continue to influence the way I see and interpret the world. At 16 I left home and became homeless, turning to skating and making art to bring meaning to my early adolescence.
Since moving to London to study at the University of Westminster, I’ve built my practice spanning painting, sculpture, and performance, using materials that reflect the friction between histories, cultures, and lived experience. My work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Saatchi Gallery’s Flowers Showcase, Saatchi and Yates (Milan), Kearsey & Gold and Incubator.
My work is about breaking borders, reimagining narratives, and allowing art to hold space for all who come across it.
