Efa Hoffmann was born in southern Germany. As a child, she began her musical education in flute and piano. In a chamber ensemble she won as a flutist at „Jugend musiziert“ competitions. Efa performed in various orchestras and choirs, including the choir of the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele. In addition, she was entrusted with the direction of various choirs and youth orchestras.
She has been working as a freelance singer and improvisation musician since her vocal studies and master classes at the State Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart, with Shong-Ho Shin, Helene Schneiderman, Montserrat Caballé and Brigitte Fassbaender. She was a participant in several international singing competitions. In 2003 she was a finalist and winner of the Audience Award of the International Korean Song Singing Competition in Berlin and traveled to Korea for the following concert tour. Since 2015 Efa Hoffmann has been working on her own projects on the redesign and reconstitution of song art in a contemporary context. In scenic or performative performances, she works on the detachment of classical music from ritualization. A cross-border interweaving with experimental musical design, free visual and performing art forms, allow a new experience and an access to the emotional, near human liveliness and drama, both in lyric and in composition. In the last years, she took part in workshops for solo-performance with Andrew Morish and David Moss. The acting and interaction with visual and performing artists has become an important part of her work. Currently she works in a studio in Berlin on new interdisciplinary projects together with international artists, realizing a collaboration between classical art song, film art, performance and sculptore.
